What You Should Know Before Buying Car Insurance For Your Young Driver

Published: December 2012

The subject of young driver car insurance is an important one. It has the potential to induce various reactions, from elation at newfound freedom for young drivers, to stress and worry in their parents. If this sounds a bit like you, there's good news. It's entirely possible to secure your young driver a quality car insurance policy. But, there are a few things you should know—and also a few things you should do—in advance, so that when the time does comes to get insurance for your teen, you'll be in a better position to land a deal.

Picking the right kind of car for your teenager to drive
can save you money.

Certain types of cars cost more to insure, regardless of who's behind the wheel or how old they are. To avoid paying higher auto insurance premiums for your teen, work with them to select a car they'll be happy with and that won't jeopardize their safety. You may be tempted to pick an older used car to secure a lower insurance rate, but always keep safety in mind. In addition to helping to protect your son or daughter in the event of an accident, a car's safety features can make you eligible for auto insurance discounts. Try to strike a good balance; you may want to choose a safer, more practical vehicle.

Grades matter.

Depending on where you live, there are laws in place that require drivers of all ages to carry certain minimum limits of insurance. As a parent, your first step should be to find out what the requirements are where you live. But, bear in mind that while you may save money on premiums by picking up only the bare essentials, it's not always the best idea. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say teen drivers continue to be one of the riskiest demographics on the road. Therefore, it makes sense that they should be well insured to cover damages they may cause to others and their property. According to the CDC:

  • Due to their lack of experience and maturity level, teenage drivers may not be able to recognize potentially dangerous situations as quickly as mature drivers.
  • Teenage drivers are four times more likely to be involved in car accidents than any other age group
  • Young drivers are much more likely to speed and keep unsafe driving distances between themselves and other drivers, which contributes to an increased rate of car accidents.

As you search for the best insurance policy for your young driver, consider the facts above and let them guide you to the right decisions.
