Little Bit of History

The state of Wisconsin encompasses 65,498 square miles and is ranked 23rd in the nation's total area. It was the 30th state to enter the union on May 29, 1848. Wisconsin was originally spelled Mescousing by the French, and later corrupted to Ouisconsin. Likely it derives from a Miami word for
it lies red (c.f. Ojibwe miskosin, it lies red). It may also come from the Ojibwe term miskwasiniing meaning red-stone place.
