The state of Minnesota encompasses 87,014 square miles and is ranked 12th in the nation's total area. It was the 32nd state to enter the union on May 11, 1858. Minnesota comes from the Dakota language name for the Minnesota River, Mnisota, meaning sky-tinted water or somewhat clouded water.
